Dichroic Configuartions

Hanna Roeckle's works move in the intermediate area between painting and sculpture. Her sculptural works are based on spatial structures and serial systems, whose constructive clarity enters into a polyphonic dialogue with sensual color gradients and color combinations. Art and research merge: the artist specifically incorporates themes from geometry and physics, systems theory, cultural, design and architectural history into her concepts. (bz)

Her oeuvre occupies an independent and idiosyncratic position in this field of tension. Based on formal working hypotheses from the Minimalist environment and equipped with the rigor of a stringent conception, the artist has developed a body of work over the past decades that precisely balances the position between these art historical constants and the variables generated by current reality. On the one hand, Roeckle has created a typology of series of works that refer to themselves, evolve from themselves, and consequently satisfy the minimalist claim of the non-referential. Also followed are other minimalist aspects: The colors come from industry, the materials are commercially available medium-density fiberboard or fiberglass plastic, and the majority of the work's production is delegated to companies. With the lacquered and thus mirror-like fiberglass-plastic surfaces, the sculptures unfold an effective play of dichroid, iridescent colors in shades of blue, violet, pink, copper or light green and gold, depending on the incidence of light. At the same time, they absorb the colors of the respective surroundings. As a result, the iridescent colors first unfold their effect in the eye of the beholder. The secret of the constant change is revealed by the individual color paths, which create a changing interplay of light and shadow. The reflections of the location contribute to this, as do the light spikes that seem to decompose the sculptures. This phenomenon has the effect of transcending the materiality of the sculptures. Then again, looking at their clearly defined design, the sculptures refer to themselves. (dvb)

This effect is based on the use of dichroic lacquer, the tones of which Hanna Roeckle has specially developed and mixed for her works according to her specifications. (db)

In their perfect aesthetics, the works seem hermetic at first. But anyone who takes a closer look at them quickly realizes how much mystery and inscrutability they harbor. With her works, Hanna Roeckle brings her storming thoughts and disturbing questions about herself and the world into a manageable form. (aak)
